By now you’re likely aware: recruiters use social media to screen potential candidates. In the most recent survey on the matter, 91% of recruiters said they screen candidates through social media.

With that in mind… have you ever wondered how and why recruiters use social media in their screening processes?

If not, perhaps you should. That knowledge is crucial to developing a strong online presence and brand… and to avoiding mistakes that get you passed over in a highly competitive job market.

Check out this interesting infographic by Reppler and Klucid that details how recruiters view you, as a candidate, through social media:

Shipboard emergencies are exceedingly rare, but every passenger should be prepared, just in case. Here are six tips that maritime experts say can save your life if your ship runs into trouble

CONDÉ NAST TRAVELER WORLDWIDE

1 Locate your muster station.

Make sure everyone in your party knows how to reach their muster station via the most direct route—and find a second way in case the first is impassable—says Benjamin Lyons, captain of the National Geographic Explorer. And remember that life jackets are found in cabins on most ships except on the new Royal Caribbean vessels, where they are kept at the muster stations.

2 Make a family plan.

Children must know where to find their life preservers and to report to their muster station if they’re separated from you. “There are very specific procedures in place for lost children,” Lyons says. Crew members will identify children and notify their parents as quickly as possible.

3 Trust your gut.

“You should always pay attention to what the crew are telling you, but be aware that they are fallible,” says Kurt Heinz, chief of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Lifesaving and Fire Safety Division. Stay calm, ask questions, and follow what your instinct tells you about staying safe. Don’t panic if you hear the crew using codes: It doesn’t necessarily indicate that the ship is in danger.

4 Don’t panic if the ship lists.

Cruise ships are designed to sink evenly, and dramatic listing such as happened with the Concordia is rare. If the ship does start to list, stay calm. “The ship would have to list quite a bit before boats on either side could not be launched,” Heinz says. From the muster station, crew members will monitor which lifeboats are in service and guide passengers to safe launching spots.

5 Locate backup rafts.

All ships carry additional life rafts, which inflate to hold up to 30 people. These rafts are generally stored by the lifeboats and can be launched by crew members if there aren’t enough usable lifeboats. “If the ship is listing and not all of the boats can be used, crew will guide passengers onto the rafts,” Lyons says. (The rafts release and inflate on their own when their containers hit the water.)

6 Be cautious about diving in.

Jumping overboard in an emergency is fraught with risk: You could be caught in a lifeboat propeller or be struck by a falling lifeboat. If the cruise ship is unstable, you could be forced under the surface; if the water is icy, hypothermia is a problem. Jump in only as a last resort. “I would strongly advise against diving into the water unless there is a horrible calamity,” Heinz says.

In a highly distributed email from the US Forest Service and BLM Fire and Aviation Management to all effected fire Wildland Firefighting agencies stated that major FAA cuts will affect wildland fire air operations nationally. In the FAA listing of the 238 towers that are scheduled to be shut down on April 1st many of them do support federal and state wildland fire air tanker bases. Also in the email it was stated in a meeting by the FAA that ”This is the new norm, you won’t get them back”.

“There are further cutbacks planned (Maintenance and repair, employee furloughs, equipment, etc) but the one item that will certainly impact us during fire season is that the closure of certain Air Traffic Control towers will present a safety issue”

See the FAA public documents that describe air traffic control towers that are due to close.”

The art of presenting – 3 top tips

In today’s entrepreneur guest blog experienced public speaker Jamie Dunn give us some key insights into how to deliver the perfect presentation…

A lot of what we do in business will come down to how we work a room, engage with people, communicate and get our message across. So, what is the art of getting a presentation/speech right?

I have spoken at over 300 events across 15 countries so I would like to think I have picked up some good tips along the way. I’ve shared some of them here with you in the hope that you take some of them away and they add value to your presentations.

PowerPoint is dead

Stop using PowerPoint, seriously. I’ve never used slides in my life. Maybe it is just me but I instantly switch off when people are presenting with the same old PowerPoint templates that I’ve seen a thousand times before. Personally, I am a big fan of using a flipchart and coloured pens. It allows me to be creative, think on the spot and most importantly of all, react to what the audience is doing.

There is nothing worse than having a presentation all prepared but then seeing the audience switching off and using their phones whilst you’re presenting. You need their engagement and so doing things differently will get it. If you are a fan of having technology in your pitch, then use “Prezi” instead. Not many people in the UK are using Prezi at the moment but it’s a million times better than PowerPoint and is far more interactive than a set of template slides.

Know your audience

It is important that you spend some time finding out who is in your audience, what their main interests are, why they are coming to listen to you and most importantly, what value you can add to them. People are coming to listen to you for a reason so when they leave, you want to have given them 100 reasons to want to come and listen to you again, or send you an email, or follow you on Twitter or even pay you to work with them.

It’s important that you provide your audience with value, but always leave them wanting more. Your presentation/speech is the perfect opportunity to market what you do and develop your business so make sure you are demonstrating your value to your audience every step of the way. For me, if I am speaking for one hour, I will spend 15 minutes discussing my background and then the other 45 minutes on sharing advice, knowledge and adding value to my audience.

Call to action

So, you’ve delivered a presentation to a room full of great people and they are really impressed and love what you do. What now? What happens next? Whilst you have your audience hooked and listening to what you have to say, that is the perfect time for you to make sure something develops afterwards. There is no point in speaking to a room full of 50 people, but you don’t give them information on how they can contact you next.

Make sure your twitter, website and email address is given in your presentation. Make sure you wait around afterwards for people to talk to you, always leave five minutes in your presentation time for questions and answers and most of all, enjoy it. When you’re enjoying it, your audience will pick up on this and naturally enjoy it more to. There is nothing worse than a nervous speaker as it makes the audience question how confident you are in the content that you are delivering. Confident presentation = confident business.

Last May, 22-year-old Joel Stubleski from Alaska found himself in a fire-fight in Eastern Afghanistan. If he hadn’t been carrying his iPhone in his pocket, he probably would not be alive today.

Stubleski was shot in the upper thigh, was bleeding heavily, and thought he was going to die. It wasn’t until he was airlifted by helicopters out of the area and medic cut off his pants that they discovered his iPhone still in his pocket — with a bullet hole through it. “The medics came up to me and they were like, ‘this is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen,’” he recalled recently to KTVA in Anchorage.

Doctors later told Stubleski that the iPhone likely changed the trajectory of the bullet, preventing it from going deeper into his leg and hitting his femoral artery, which could have killed him.

The young soldier is still recovering from his injuries months later and as a memento uses a photo of his old phone as the cover for his new one. “Some people are saying it’s bad luck,” he said. “But it helped me out, so I think it’s good luck.”

Here is some assistance with that dilemma:

If you are an NPS or federal land management employee [USFS, BLM, FWS, BIA] contact the fire management officer for your park / cluster / or land management office.

If you are not an NPS or other federal land management agency employee, your best opportunity to obtain an Incident Qualifications Card (aka a Red Card), is through pursuing a wildland fire position for a local, state, federal or private contract company which responds to wildland fires. A few sites to get you started:

DOI Fire Jobs: http://www.firejobs.doi.gov/

US Forest Service Fire and Aviation Management Jobs:http://www.fs.fed.us/fire/people/employment/index.html

State Forestry Organizations: http://www.stateforesters.org/about/who-we-work/coalitions[Use the drop-down under Member Roster to access specific state websites]

National Wildfire Suppression Association (represents wildland fire services contractors in the private sector):http://www.nwsa.us/
